You might enjoy the beautiful sound of an acoustic guitar, or Jimi Hendrix’s screaming feedback. You might be a compulsive tapper that needs to play the drums. Maybe you want to sing like Amy Winehouse, or play piano like Jools Holland? Perhaps you really like making music on an iPad and recording your own songs, or why not form your own band? We often put on local concerts for our students – playing in a band is a memorable experience especially if it’s something you’ve never done before, it’s on many people’s bucket list!
You can do all of that and more at MusicStation. Virtually everyone loves music, so we think that everyone should have the chance to play an instrument or sing. We are the biggest private music school in the Southeast and currently have 500+ students per week and have taught approximately 200,000 lessons since our opening in September 2013 – and we are still growing fast, with new students and groups starting every week. We also provide music services for many local schools.
Benefits of Small Group Tuition
Teamwork – Family/ friends of the same ability can learn together. Students also get to meet new people with shared interests. Students can work together on the same topic during the lesson, but can still also work individually using headphones when needed. You can share the common problems in learning an instrument while working together with our tutors.
Performance – One of the great things about playing music is to perform in front of others. Learning in groups can really help to reduce any fear of performing because everybody plays out loud together in every lesson.
Confidence – We have seen many nervous or shy students grow in confidence by learning in a small group.
Fun – Groups create more excitement. Students leave their lessons saying they learnt a lot and still had fun!
Ensemble Work – You will have opportunities to work on pieces together, such as harmonising vocals, playing bass lines while others play lead, playing percussion parts and building up chord sequences together.
Practice – Group lessons have a sense of momentum that encourages students to practice more.
Experience/ Ability – We ensure that everyone will study at their correct level and pace, with a maximum of 5 in a group.
Results – We have an excellent track record of grade exam achievement, with many students attaining distinctions.
Cost – Only £15.50 per 30 minute session.
Historically, musical instruments have mainly been taught individually. This method has been used by many teachers in the past, but is it really the best way to learn? Although most learning is actually carried out in groups – at school, in sports, arts and drama etc – the teaching of music has mostly developed using one-to-one tuition. However the acclaimed and long established music teaching methods of Suzuki and Yamaha have been using group tuition very successfully for decades, and their methods have created some of the most brilliant classical musicians.
These methods focus on learning by ear and the development of true musicianship – that is, the ability to understand how music works and to internalise and memorise musical repertoire, and interacting musically with others in the group. Playing or singing together out loud in a lesson is a powerful learning tool.
The internet and development of tablets and music education apps has also provided some interesting opportunities to learn music in new different ways. Many students are already learning from Youtube and some teachers are using apps for learning notation along with creating and sharing music.
The teaching of rock and pop music is comparatively new compared with centuries of classical tuition, which has by now formed itself into a very thorough and rigorous system. Many people believe that the ability to play rock and pop music is instinctual and informal, and cannot be taught effectively – but that’s not the case!
Our tutors have extensive knowledge of the history of rock and pop music. They are able to analyse the different features, characteristics and techniques used widely in popular music, and present this knowledge in a structured and enjoyable way, using well-known songs and a wide range of musical styles.
At MusicStation we are taking the best elements from many teaching methods – group tuition, the rigour of classical teaching and the use of new digital technologies – then combining them into our own MusicStation method. And it’s working very successfully!
