Danny Glavin

Danny is a clarinet, saxophone and flute player with ten years experience of teaching and even more experience of playing in a huge variety of different bands and ensembles from orchestras to pagan rock bands. Danny trained as a classical musician in Ireland and used to regularly play in pit bands for shows including at the prestigious National Folklore Theatre of Ireland. In 2010 he moved to the UK to complete a Masters in Performance at Canterbury Christ Church University (where he received an award for ‘Outstanding achievement / contribution to the music department’) and began regularly playing in bands and horn sections alongside his classical performances. Since then he has performed on ITV, Channel 4 and BBC Radio London and played some major festivals including Goodwood Revival and Boomtown Fair.
Danny was always tried to keep his performing life as interesting as possible and as a result has played with Bollywood bands, Reggae bands, function bands, German Folk bands, Afrobeat bands, Irish Folk bands and even free improvising contemporary classical music ensembles. As a jazz musician Danny regularly plays with the Galvin Quartet, has performed at the Canterbury Festival, Kinsale Jazz Festival and Cork Jazz Festival and has a special love of Big Band where he has recorded and performed with various bands including the repeat National award winning Orbi Playa Big Band -which he was also assistant musical director for two years. With original bands Danny has played at Boomtown Fair, Lounge on the Farm, and Smugglers Festival amongst others and with function bands has had corporate gigs for clients such as Pfizer, Evian and Bosch. As a classical musician Danny’s highlights include a tour with European Youth Wind Orchestra, billing as a ‘Rising Star’ at Kerry International Chamber Music Festival and performances of world premieres at the Sounds New Contemporary Music festival. As a conductor Danny directed a concert band performance at the conference of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and two orchestral performances at Sounds New.
As a teacher Danny has ten years of experience and has studied education at both undergraduate and post grad levels as well as receiving a diploma in teaching from Trinity. Danny has taught Clarinet, Saxophone, Flute, oboe, bassoon, recorder, piano and music theory both in groups and one to one. He has also worked as part of Sounds New Contemporary Music Festival’s education and outreach department on projects including teaching composition to classes of school children.
While in Ireland Danny ran a youth big band and a youth concert band and regularly coached chamber music ensembles.
When not playing or teaching Danny is also the Artistic Director of Sandfyre Music (a collective of gigging musicians based in SE London and Kent) and a part time engineer at Live Sound UK .
